Film producer Karen Bartlett first discovered the work of architect Mary Jane Colter in 1986. With the help of historians and consultants from 20 different states, she discovered new information that challenged what was previously believed to be true and provided fresh insights into Colter and her work. In 1997, Ms. Bartlett’s script for Mary Jane Colter: House Made of Dawn received the Mary Stott award for writing from the Foundation for the Study of the Arts and Crafts Movement. In addition, she has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Park Foundation, the Graham Foundation, the Heard Museum and the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Foundation. She has over 15 years experience producing, directing and writing documentaries. Raised in the Middle East and Europe, she studied in Scotland and London before returning to the United States. In addition to a degree in business and film from Trinity University, she studied architectural engineering for two years. Her credits include Give Me Shelter, a documentary about victims of abuse and women’s shelters; Legacy, for the Easter Island Foundation; and LA Freeways.
