Location:
Approximately 40 miles north of Phoenix.
Driving Directions from Phoenix:
Take I-17 north to Bloody Basin Road (exit 259). This road is also Forest
Route 269. The monument is located 40 miles north of Phoenix and immediately
east of I-17 between Black Canyon City and Cordes Junction.
Recreation:
Prehistoric archaeological sites are numerous but remote and inaccessible.
No sites have been developed for public visitation. Visitors who encounter
prehistoric sites are encouraged to observe, enjoy and photograph them
without touching, moving or removing any artifacts. Additional activities
include wildlife viewing, photography, primitive camping, hiking, hunting
and rugged back-country vehicle travel (no off-road travel allowed).
Camping:
Dispersed camping is allowed in the Agua Fria area for no more than 14
days within any period of 28 consecutive days.
Facilities:
None
Required Permits:
Activities that were permitted on these public lands before the designation,
such as grazing and authorized rights-of-way are still allowed, except
for new mining claims. No new permits will be issued until a monument
management plan is completed.
Safety:
Potential hazards exist, including rugged and unmarked roads, poisonous
reptiles and insects, extreme heat and flash floods. Visitors should bring
ample water and gasoline. Four-wheel drive is recommended. Visitors must
stay on main roads.
