Location:
The Ironwood Forest National Monument is located 25 miles northwest of
Tucson, and about one hour by highway south of Phoenix.
Driving Directions from Phoenix:
From Phoenix, travel east on I-10 to Avara Valley Road exit or to the
Red Rock exit. From the Red Rock exit, travel southwest on Sasco Road
to Silverbell Road.
Recreation:
The amazing array of animal and birds at the monument provides visitors
with abundant opportunities for wildlife viewing. In some years, with
the right mix of spring rain, a magnificent display of wildflowers greets
visitors. Vehicles must remain on roads or trails.
Camping:
Camping is allowed up to 14 days.
Required Permits:
Activities that were permitted before the designation as a national monument
are still permitted, except for new mining claims and geothermal leasing.
Commercial activities require a permit. The BLM processes requests for
new permits for special recreational activities (i.e. mountain biking
events).
Facilities:
None
Safety:
Visits require special planning and awareness of potential hazards including
rough, unmarked roads, abandoned mine shafts, venomous reptiles and insects,
extreme heat and flash floods. Visitors must bring ample water and gasoline.
