Plan Your Trip

Location:
Tonto National Monument is located 110 miles east of Phoenix and 4 miles east of Roosevelt, Arizona.

Driving Directions from Phoenix:
Take State Highway 60 (Superstition Freeway) east to Globe/Miami (75 miles); turn left (northwest) on State Highway 188; drive 30 miles to Tonto National Monument.

Visitors may hike Lower Cliff Dwelling Trail and visit Lower Cliff Dwelling, view the orientation video program and exhibits in the visitor center and participate in interpretive activities when scheduled.

Scheduled walks and talks during busy visitor season, November through April.
A paved trail to the Lower Cliff Dwelling is self-guided (one mile round trip). Leashed pets are permitted on the Lower Cliff Dwelling trail.

Guided tours to Upper Cliff Dwelling, November through the end of April; three to four hours, three miles round trip; reservations required. Four tours given weekly, depending on staffing. Tours limited to 15 people and often fill quickly; call for reservations early. Pets are not allowed on the Upper Cliff Dwelling Trail.

Excellent opportunity for educational groups studying Southwestern archeology to visit original dwellings; call in advance for special talks and tours, and for more information.
Time to view orientation program and exhibits and hike to Lower Cliff Dwelling: 1 to 2 hours. Time to participate in Upper Dwelling tour: 3 to 4 hours.

Camping:
Camping is not permitted in the park, but campsites are available at Roosevelt Lake.

Facilities:
Lower level visitor center includes museum exhibits, sales area, ranger assistance, rest rooms and an orientation program on video by request. The upper level of the visitor center has an A/V room and viewing platform. The parking lot has limited turning radius; vehicles longer than 30 feet and towing another vehicle experience difficulty negotiating the turn. Large vehicle parking is available .5 miles below visitor center at picnic area.

There are 2 trails available for hiking: the Lower Cliff Dwelling and Upper Cliff Dwelling. A short offshoot of the Lower Cliff Dwelling is the Cactus Patch Trail. The picnic area located .5 mile below visitor center (.5 mile inside park entrance) and includes restrooms, water, seven tables, covered with shade armadas. All facilities are handicapped accessible.

Food, fuel and lodging are available in Roosevelt, Globe and Payson, Arizona.

Safety:
Visitors must not climb or lean on the monument walls and must stay on established trails watching for steep grades and uneven surfaces. Visitors should take necessary precautions to avoid exhaustion or dehydration. Rattlesnakes inhabit the area. Visitors should retreat slowly and report sightings to a ranger.
