KAET-TV/Channel 8 See the legendary American Southwest as never before in this sweeping
journey across Arizona, Colorado and Utah. Southwest Symphony
is a dazzling mosaic of stunning images artfully synchronized to a soundtrack
of great classical composers. Southwest Symphony showcases the region's scenic grandeur, outdoor lifestyles and fascinating wildlife. Fog-shrouded forests and brilliant wildflowers, gentle streams and whitewater rapids, ghostly canyons and serene valleys, arid deserts and snow-capped mountains are enhanced by the music of Copland, Dvorák, Bartók, Sibelius, Debussy, de Falla, Handel and Glazunov. Through the magic of editing, elk, bighorn sheep, antelope, bobcats, javelina, prairie dogs, and tortoises appear in scenes choreographed perfectly to the music. Images of wild mustangs racing across sweeping mesas contrast with the elegant ballet of tiny hummingbirds and delicate butterflies. A modern locomotive powers through a snowbank, offering dramatic counterpoint to ancient Indian ruins and petroglyphs. Scenes of working cowboys, river rafters, hang gliders and rodeo riders provide eloquent testimony to man's presence in this ruggedly beautiful land. If one picture is worth a thousand words, this program speaks volumes about the spirit of the Southwest without a single word of narration. Southwest Symphony was conceived and developed by KAET/Phoenix in partnership with Rocky Mountain PBS and KUED/Salt Lake City. The three public television stations secured the services of independent producer Michael Wanger because of his expertise in creating this genre of program. Wanger's award-winning Nature's Serenade, Nature's Symphony and Wildlife Symphony have aired nationally on PBS to much acclaim. Shared resources and facilities by the three stations produced significant cost savings and resulted in a program that is greatly enhanced in scope and variety. This first collaborative venture is expected to find an enthusiastic audience in each of the broadcast areas. Southwest Symphony is part of Channel 8's Arizona Collection, a series of programs that explores the land, history and people of Arizona. Funding provided by the KAET Program Partners and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through the Pacific Mountain Network Program Fund.
